“So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your t.v. set away. And in its place you can install a lovely bookcase on the wall.” -Roald Dahl
I’m from a small town in southern Ohio, where I grew up listening to old country music and nerding it up with a room full of books. I was really blessed to have a mom who loved to read to me and encouraged me to read challenging stuff. Even now, when we talk on the phone, I’d say half of the chat is about what book we’re into right then and I get care packages from her every so often with books that she wants me to read.
I’ve always been a little bookworm, but lately I have been just devouring books. I decided to keep a blog to talk about the books I’m reading, share bookish tools and helpful sites, and talk about getting books for really cheap. I literally don’t remember the last time that I bought a new book.
A while back, I got married to a great guy and we packed up and moved to Akron so he could do work that he loves. Meanwhile, I work part time at a small cafe in our neighborhood, keep our little apartment in good shape, experiment in the kitchen, and read piles and piles of books that I get from thrift stores. I also love to sew and quilt, although this is a fairly new hobby and I still have a lot to learn.
It’s a good life. We have a closet full of board games. Our families are crazy about us and beg us to come visit just about every day. We go to a great church that motivates and inspires. We sing. A lot. Mostly songs that we’ve made up. We try to spend as much time as we can outside. We buy locally as much as possible, and there is a great farmer’s market near us that we can’t stay away from. I’m a little obsessed with eating healthy and clean, although I have a major, major weakness for any kind of icing.
I would love to hear from you if you have book recommendations or just have a question or comment. Feel free to email me at jacki@lovelylittleshelf.com. Thanks!
