Lovely Little Shelf

Book Blog Hop (24)

Morning, kiddies.  Hope everyone had a great week.  Summer is flying by and it is totally shocking to me that we’re now looking at mid-July. Eek! This morning has been pretty wonderful so far: Izey slept in a little, the sunrise was stunning, I got to lay in bed reading for a little bit…. but I have a dentist appointment today and I know that he’s just going to ruin it all.  I ended up with a really nice dentist, which is great because I have a pretty serious dentist phobia, but I even think that he is a bit of a sadist.  Who would want to only cause people pain and fear? Seriously.  I’ll let you know how it goes, but I’ve been having a toothache for a few weeks, so if I had to guess, I’d say that this it is not going to go well. That’s all.

On to the hop!

If you aren’t familiar, the Book Blog Hop is hosted by Jenn over at Crazy for Books and is just a chance to get new visitors to your blog and, in turn, check out a bunch of great new blogs.  I’ve found some of my favorite book blogs this way and get so exited every week to find new ones.

The question this week is: How/where do you get your books? Do you buy them or go to the library? Is there a certain website you use like paperback swap?

Let me just reiterate for those of you new to my blog: I am a cheapskate.  I cannot imagine spending 20-something dollars on a book. Even 5 makes me squirmy.  However, I have a pretty huge book collection and I just love to own the books that I’ve read.

Thrift stores and library sales are my friend.

I am subscribed to an email that tells me what booksales are in my area each week, so when there are good ones close, I hit them up big time.  I also have an incredible library about 20 minutes away that does book sales twice a month that are always awesome.  One of the thrift stores near me frequently has really good books, so when we go there, I head to the books first.  I can usually find some good ones.  At the booksales and the thrift store, I generally pay $1 per book.  I can get a whole bag for the price of one paperback at the bookstore.

When I just HAVE to have something new, and for the Presidential Challenge, I almost always use Amazon.  We are Prime members so shipping is free and their prices are pretty low anyway. If it is something I only half want to read, I get it from the library with the agreement in my head that if I love it I can buy myself a copy.  I’ve never gone through with it ;)

If there was a great indy store around here, I would make sure to support them from time to time, but there really isn’t.  There is one in a town about a half hour away and when we make it there, I generally buy something even if I feel like it’s over-priced, just to give them some of my dollars.  I literally do not remember the last time I made a purchase at a big box store, although I do enjoy browsing and having coffee there.

Woah. I got kind of long winded there, huh?

Again, if you’re here from the Hop, thanks for stopping by!  Leave a comment with a link to your blog and I’ll be sure to repay the visit!

I am not on the blog hop, but I am also like you. Even though I hate having to spend so much on books, at times I make the exception. I order online most of the time since the books are half priced. Other times I use the library since I try not to buy ALL the books I read. I try to keep the buying for those I know I love or may also be for my stepdaughter to read.

Hopping by and boy I thought I got a little long winded..LOL. I wish I was a cheapskate..it would save me money, but I am too big of a book addict. I am sort of a I want it and I want it now sort of person..my library isn’t real big and when they do have sells I hardly ever find anything I want. :(

Two years ago I started tracking where my books were coming from. Please come see where I get my books.

I’m seeing a pattern of book acquisition here. After all, there are just so many places to get books and so many different ways to read them.

It’s hard to beat the library for price and selection but it’s even harder to beat the convenience of browsing BN or Amazon from a Nook or Kindle, hitting a button and reading the book you picked in about sixty seconds.
