Lovely Little Shelf

Book Blog Hop (18)

Yay for Friday!  This morning was so nice and relaxing and I wanted Shaun to stay home oh so bad.  So glad that tomorrow is Saturday and he can do just that.  My parents came up last weekend which was seriously wonderful, but I’m really looking forward to just hanging out with Isaac and Shaun this weekend- especially since the weather is FINALLY starting to clear up.  We’ve been doing things like siting on the patio and going for walks and stuff.  It is wonderful.

Anyway! On to the Hop!

If you aren’t familiar, the Book Blog Hop is hosted by Jenn over at Crazy for Books and is just a chance to get new visitors to your blog and, in turn, check out a bunch of great new blogs.  I’ve found some of my favorite book blogs this way and get so exited every week to find new ones.

The question this week is: Pick a character from a book that you are currently reading and tell us about him/her.

Right now I’m reading House of Sand and Fog.  The main female character’s name is Kathy.  Her husband Nick left her a few months ago and she got kicked out of her house because of a screw up in the county’s system.  When her house gets bought in an auction and is no longer “hers” she kind of loses it.  She has cut of ties back home and ends up having an affair with a married police officer.  She’s been in rehab and self-help groups but she kind of ends up in this downward spiral.

The whole book I’ve just felt for her so, so much.  I think that most of these horrible decisions she is making has everything to do with the fact that she is lonely.  Her husband left her and she has cut off everyone else in her family and she lives all the way across the country from them.  At one point she does call her brother but gets too nervous to talk to him about what is really happening and ends up right back where she started.  It really is heartbreaking.

I’m a little over halfway through the book and just reached a point where I feel like Kathy has pretty much bottomed out.  I’m looking forward to seeing if there will be redemption for her character or if she will be this tragic, flawed character from beginning to end.

Again, if you’re here from the Hop, thanks for stopping by!  Leave a comment with a link to your blog and I’ll be sure to repay the visit!

I have never read House of Sand and Fog. You did a great job describing Kathy.

I LOVE your blog! Your header is too cute.

My husband and I recently saw the movie of House of Sand and Fog. I haven’t read the book, so I’m not sure how much the movie deviates. I really liked the movie; let’s say I found it intruiging and tragic. It’s interesting that you feel for Kathy, because I didn’t like her at all! I felt more for the other characters in the story. Again, I don’t know if that was just because of the movie, but the author also said many women find that they don’t like Kathy. Keep us posted about your thoughts when you finish it.

I am definitely following you. Hope you stop by and check out my blog!

Hopping through. Wow, I’ve never read that book, but I’ve heard of it. Didn’t realize that Kathy was such a tragic character. I get in the mood for really depressing books every now and then, so this should be up my alley!

Here’s my Book Blogger Hop: 4/15-4/18 post!
