Lovely Little Shelf

Book Blog Hop (6)

Hey! Just doing another week of the book blog hop.  The Hop is hosted by Jenn over at Crazy For Books and is a fun way to get to know new bloggers.  If you’re here for the first time, so glad you made it.

I had a pretty intense week.  Sometimes weeks with babies are like that.  It’s crazy how much Isaac is changing and growing and how his moods and attitudes change just about daily.  He was sniffily and sick this week, then yesterday he got shots.  Ugh.  Poor little feller.  Made for a kind of needy, very snuggily baby all week.  I guess it could be worse, huh?

Anyway, back to the Hop.  The question this week is: “What do you consider more important to the story, the plot or the character?”

I think if there is not a character that I can connect with, it is hard for me to even care about the plot.  In action-y, plot driven books I just read to get it over with.  For me it seems like the depth in a book is lost when the characters are flat and boring.  I feel like most people walk away from books remembering the characters and their relationships so much more than the storyline.

Maybe this is just the relational side of me coming through, though. I don’t know.  I just think that one of the big things that I’ve taken away from being a reader is a sense of empathy towards so many people.  I feel like I can see the world from a ton of different perspectives and the reason is that I’ve read about the world through so many character’s eyes.

Do you think that reading makes people more empathetic?  Has it done that to you?  Do you think that characters are more memorable than plotlines? Let me know what you think!

Again, if you’re here from the Hop, thanks for stopping by!  Leave a comment with a link to your blog and I’ll be sure to repay the visit!

    Hi,
Hopping by and following through. Great question – I believe it does make a person much more empathetic – simply because of the exposure to things that are so very different to what you might experience.

This might be the best Book Blogger Hop question I’ve seen to date.

So what’s the answer? Plot! Hop over to my blog and let me tell you how a good plot rescued bad characters from bad book oblivion.

I think characters are definitely more memorable than plot lines. I don’t know if reading has made me more empathetic in real life, but I do always feel empathy towards the characters I read about. An emotional attachment to me is a signal of a good book. Here’s my answer.

Oh, I definitely think that reading has made me a more empathetic person. It’s so much easier for me to “flip the tables,” so to speak. I also agree with you about what you take away from a book–I remember the characters much more than I do the plot.
