I actually have a couple of Indie bookstores that I am pretty much in love with. This first one, The Learned Owl, in Hudson, Ohio is pretty much the cutest little bookstore in the world. Hudson is actually about a half of an hour away from where we live, but I love their library, their cupcake shop, the toy shop and of course the bookshop. I’m going to go ahead and answer the same questions I asked everyone else.
How long have you been shopping there? We’ve lived in Akron for a little over two years and I think that we discovered it pretty much right off the bat.
Do you know the staff? Not personally, but I do recognize several of them by sight.
Are they helpful? Way. I feel like most of them are pretty knowledgable and genuinely excited about books.
What sets your indy bookstore apart from chain stores? They have a huge section of “local” books. Almost the whole upstairs is books by local authors. They have great signings and always have left over signed books on the shelves. They also have their own book club and support a bunch of local ones. They even keep a list of the book clubs, when they meet, who they are and what they’re reading. Pretty cool.
Does your store have new and used books or only one or the other? They only have new books, but they have a basement level that is all clearance items and there’s always good deals to be found.
How many times a month do you visit? Usually just one or two, although if it were closer, I’d be in there all the time.
Does your store do special events/ author signings/ things like that? Yup. They keep a sign out front with the upcoming authors. They’ve had some pretty big names and are also really into supporting local authors, which I think is great.
