Flashback Friday: The Hobbit

The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien

Oh, The Hobbit.  Such fond memories.  We had a great collection of the Lord of the Rings books while I was growing up.  They were paperback and all fit in this tidy little box together.  In fifth grade, we had to choose a book to do a book report on and for some reason that I will never know, I chose to do The Hobbit.  I started it and was immediately lost.  I told my mom that I didn’t really “get it” and she said, “It’s fantasy.  You aren’t supposed to get it.  Just keep reading. It’s amazing.” So I took her advice.

And I was lost the entire time. I never really understood what was happening or why.

When it came time to give the book report, I had my first true experience with B.S.  :)  I just got up there and rambled on and on for about 5 minutes, or whatever the time period was we had to talk.  I remember that I made a poster board and everything, all the while having no real idea what was going on.  It was magnificent.

Just recently, I decided to re-read The Hobbit and this time I got it and really enjoyed it.  I tried to start in on the rest of the series, but again, I was just lost.  Maybe I’ll give it 10 or 15 years and give it another go.  Hey, it worked with The Hobbit!
