I loved this book (and the movie). Like you, I thought that it went beyond the typical immigration story. The writing was superb--As is her collection of short stories. This novel reminded me a little of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club, only without the joy, the luck, and the club. Maybe it was the whole mother/ daughter thing versus the father/ son. I don't know. But, it was awesome. I'd read anything that she wrote!
